Rationale for the Course:

This course is designed to teach language skills that are necessary to communicate in American Sign Language. It is an intermediate course for: basic preparation for careers in the field of deaf education such as teaching and interpreting; learning the language for personal use; and/or satisfying General Education requirements. It satisfies the following G.E. requirements: MPC, Area C, Humanities; CSU, Area C, Foreign Language; and UC, Languages other than English.

Objectives:

In this course you will learn how to communicate in American Sign Language. This includes learning vocabulary; fingerspelling; grammar; non-manual language behavior and conceptual accuracy. An overview of other systems of communication used by deaf/hard of hearing persons as well as specialized communication equipment used by deaf/hard of hearing persons will be included in the course.
