GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

MPC students who plan to transfer to a University of California or California State University campus in advance standing (as a junior) should satisfy as many University, College and Major requirements (prerequisites) as possible before transferring. The California State University has a systemwide General Education pattern that meets the General Education-Breadth Requirements of CSU.  Transfer students have the option of  completing the CSU-GE Pattern or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum Pattern (IGETC).

Each campus of the UC system has its own specific general education and major requirements; many UC campuses will honor certification of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum.

Transferring students should request that a Certification of General Education Requirements be sent, with an official transcript, to the appropriate California State University or University of California.

It should be noted that completion of the CSU-GE or IGETC is not a requirement for transfer to CSU or UC,  nor is it the only way to fulfill the lower-division General Education requirements for CSU or UC prior to transfer.  Students pursuing majors that require extensive lower division preparation may find that the IGETC inappropriate to follow. The IGETC will probably be most useful for students who want to keep their options open before making a final decision about transferring to a particular CSU or UC campus.

CSU-GE PATTERN

The California State University has a basic pattern of General Education requirements totaling 48 units: 39 lower division and a minimum of 9 upper division General Education units, which must be completed after transfer. It is not mandatory that the 39 units of General Education be completed before transfer, but it is in the student's best interest to do so. If students do not complete the General Education requirements before transferring, the courses they complete may be reviewed differently at each university to which they transfer.

IGETC PATTERN

The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that community college students can use to satisfy lower division education requirement for transfer to CSU or UC campus. Courses must be completed for all areas with a grade of "C" or better. Students intending to transfer to CSU are required to take an additional course in Oral Communication and do not need to demonstrate proficiency in language other than English.
