Degrees & Certificates


MPC offers Associate of Arts Degrees and Certificates in Directing, Acting, Technical Theater, and Costuming.


These are two-year programs designed to teach the student enough to get a job in the field. Students who complete a transfer curriculum with 60 units of credit can transfer with sophomore status to a California University. Students who want only a Certificate in Drama do not need to complete any of the General Education requirements. Those interested in obtaining an A.A. Degree must complete these General Education requirements:
Students transferring to 4 year schools must take additional general education units.

In addition to the General Education requirements, each drama student (both A.A. and certificate) must complete a Drama course of study that includes the following:

Directing Majors can choose three courses from the fourteen below:
  • Dram 5-Film Appreciation
  • Dram 7 a OR b-Writing for the Theatre(I or II)
  • Dram 12-Stage Movement
  • Dram 15b-Advanced Acting
  • Dram 18b-Advanced Directing
  • Dram 23-Stage Lighting
  • Dram 24-Beginning Costuming
  • Dram 30-Chamber/Readers Theatre
  • Dram 35-Musical Comedy Workshop
  • Dram 41-Play Production-Dramatic
  • Dram 43-Play production-Classical
  • Dram 60-Experimental Theatre-Original
  • Dram 61-Experimental Theatre-Comedy
Technical Students may choose three courses
from the following list of eleven:
  • Dram 21b-Theatre Workshop II
  • Dram 23-Stage Lighting
  • Dram24-Beginning Costuming
  • Dram 25-Stage Makeup
  • Dram 30-Chamber/Readers' Theatre
  • Dram 35-Musical Comedy Workshop
  • Dram 42-Play Production-Musical
  • Dram 43-Play Production-Classical
  • Dram 62- Experimental Theatre-Drama
  • Dram 63-Experimental Theatre-Comedy
  • Dram 79-Technical Workshop
Acting Students may choose three courses from the following list of fifteen:
  • Dram 5-Film Appreciation
  • Dram 7a-Writing for the Theatre I
  • Dram 12-Stage Movement
  • Dram 15b-Advanced Acting
  • Dram 24-Beginning Costuming
  • Dram 25-Stage Makeup
  • Dram 30-Chamber/Readers' Theatre
  • Dram 31-Acting Improvisation
  • Dram 35-Musical Comedy Workshop
  • Dram 40-Play Production-Comedy
  • Dram 44-Summer Musical
  • Dram 57-Touring Theatre
  • Dram 58-Childrens' Theatre
  • Dram 59-Repertory Theatre
  • Dram 60-Experimental Theatre-Original
Costuming A.A. Degree candidates
must not only complete the General Education
requirements, but must also complete these courses before choosing electives:
  • Art 22-Design I: 2-D
  • Art 24-Color Fundamentals
  • Art 3a-Figure Drawing
  • Dram 24 Beginning Costuming
  • Fash 15-Textiles
  • and Fash 61
Costumers then get to choose two of these five courses:
  • Art 42-Illustration
  • Dram 1-Drama Appreciation
  • Dram 23-Stage Lighting
  • Fash 52-History of Fashion
  • Fash 80
And they get to choose one of the following five:
  • Fash 63-Tailoring
  • Fash 68
  • Fash 71
  • Fash73
  • and/or Fash 75-Sewing Specialty Fabrics
Finally, costumers get to choose one from this list of five:
  • Dram 25-Stage Makeup
  • Dram 90
  • Fash 65
  • Fash 91-Fashion Work Experience
  • or Fash 126-Specialized Sewing Options

This is, of course, a general guide.
