The Lance H. Jacobson Scholarship in Technical Theatre Studies
The Lance H. Jacobson SITTS at MPC is a need-based award given to students at Monterey Peninsula College that embody the spirit and passion for Technical Theatre held by the Scholarship’s namesake. The award is administered by the Morgan Stock Charitable Theatre Arts Trust in association with Mr. Jacobson’s wife, Christine, who will choose recipients based upon need, merit, or perceived passion whenever qualified students show their distinction while enrolled at MPC. While applications are not required, a student with interest and passion may apply to the Trust by writing an essay expressing what draws them to Technical Theatre, and what they hope to achieve in the field. Essays will be reviewed and determinations made within 30 days.
Lance Jacobson was primarily a stage technician working all aspects of production behind the scenes on the Monterey Peninsula from 1970 until his untimely death in 2004 of liver cancer. He worked in all local performance venues and has been a strong, supportive, creative force in our theatre community. Over the years he was Technical Director for The Hidden Valley Performing Arts Centre, The Wharf Theatre, Sunset Center Theater, the Forest Theater Guild, CET and the Unicorn Theatre. He was a respected member of the International Alliance of Theatrical & Stage Employees, Local 611. He was widely acknowledged as a guiding force or mentor to a generation of the area’s best Stagehands. Organizers of this Scholarship wish to respect this legacy by allowing it to live on with future generations of capable and enthusiastic Theatre Technicians.
