LIKE a pussycat or that I am LIKE a tiger. (Remember = similes.) I’m saying that
we actually are these things.
I am,
of course, lying.

Well,
perhaps wildly exaggerating to make a point is more like
it.
Pussycats are nice little purring
creatures that snuggle up and like to
be petted. Tig= ers bite and growl and
are extremely dangerous--like me.
(Whoops! I accidentally slipped in

it’s quite common to
find both similes and met=
aphors
used in the same pie=
ce of
writing.
The
clearest metaphors are
those that say simply that
one thing is something else. Let’s look at a co= mmon insult:

am not for one instant actually suggesting
that he is the male puppy of a
female dog--even though I have
clearly
stated that. Few women, howev=

would find it flattering for someone

Now =
to sum
up:
I have just insulted =
this
guy because I spoke =
rudely
about his mother, and =
since
dogs aren’t too=
fussy
about whom they mate with, I=
have
cast doubts on the
legitimacy of his =
birth.
This was not, I might add, =
a nice
thing to do.
