TEXTBOOK:   Elementary Statistics,  A Brief Version, 5th Edition  by Bluman
        The course will cover Chapters 1 - 11
                                 
CALCULATOR
 
        All students are required to have a  TI-83 or TI-83-plus Graphing Calculator.  A limited
         number of "loaner calculators" are available for students unable to purchase one.
 
 
PREREQUISITE
        Math 263 (Intermediate Algebra) or equivalent with grade of C or better.  It is recommended
        that the prerequisite was completed in the last two years. 
 
 
ATTENDANCE:
 
        You are expected to attend all class meetings. If you miss a test (or during the first two
        weelks if youmiss three consecutive days), you will be dropped from the rolls.  . If you
         must be absent or if you miss a test but want to remain in the course, call the instructor.
 
        If you decide to drop the class, be sure to notify the instructor and also officially drop
        the course at the registrar's office by  Tuesday, November 16 at 5:00 p.m. 
        Failure to do this may result in you receiving a grade of F in the course.

 
ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
 
        Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and other electronic devices during class. 
        Cell phones may not be used as a calculator during tests.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (Course objectives):
  
     
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
          1)  Describe and represent data graphically and numerically
          2)  Demonstrate a basic knowledge of probability theory, identify and
                 calculate probabilities using discrete and continuous distributions
          3)  Make inferences about population parameters based on sample
                 statistics.

    
HOMEWORK:
 
        Homework will be assigned at each class meeting and discussed the following day.
        Most assignments will not be collected but must be done to learn the material.

TESTS:
 
        Tests: There will eight tests during the semester, each covering one or two  
             chapters in the book.  Test questions will be very similar to the homework
             problems.  Test dates will be announced in advance and posted on my website.
 
        Final Exam: The final exam will cover the entire course and will count 2 tests grades.
             The final exam for this semester will be Monday, Dec 13, 12:45 - 3:15 pm.
 
        Rules: Any violation of exam rules and procedures may result in the student being 
             dropped from the course or receiving an “F" grade.

        Make-upsThere will be no make-up tests. Each person may drop his or her
             lowest test grade at the end of the term.  If a test is missed, that will be the grade
             that is dropped.  You cannot drop the final exam grade.
 
 
GRADES:
 
        Tests will be given a percent score. Your grade in the course will be based on an
         average of these scores as follows:
 
                                A = 90 - 100%
                                B = 80 - 89%
                                C = 70 - 79%    
                                D = 60 - 69%
                                F =  0 - 59%
