Course Description: This course is designed to assist the transfer student in completing/filing admission applications to four-year colleges and universities. Hours by arrangement (please make an appointment with the instructor/counselor who is located in the Counseling Dept. (in MPC's Student Services Building).

 

Course Objectives

 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

      describe the admission/transfer application process to four-year colleges

 

      identify the admission requirements (especially as a transfer student) to four-year colleges

 

complete (at least one) application for admission to four-year college(s) both electronically and manually.

 

prepare a Personal Statement/Admissions essay

                                   

Text

 There is no required text. Students will access information from various sources, such as: via the Internet (online CSUMentor, online UCPathways, etc.), transfer campuses materials (for e.g., reviewing the preferred college’s Catalog), and by utilizing the resources in MPC’s Career/Transfer Center (in MPC's Student Services Building).

  

What Will We Be Doing?

 

This course is designed to encourage & assist you in exploring and gathering information about possible transfer college(s) for the purpose of effectively completing/submitting your application (in a timely manner) to your preferred college. We will be involved in: identifying admission/transfer requirements & needed student services, evaluating your transfer readiness, introducing Transfer Articulation Agreements (TAA), writing application essays, and completing (at least one) application for transfer to a four-year college/university.

 

Grading:  Credit/No Credit (CR/NC)

 

All of the following conditions must be met to earn a grade of CR in this course:

 

1.      Students must meet with the instructor/counselor at the beginning of the course to discuss the     objectives and assignments.

 

2.      After completing transfer college research, students will identify: their preferred transfer college(s), their desired educational level (type of degree), and their intended major.

 

3.      Students will identify the admission/transfer requirements and student services available (at their preferred college).

 

4.      Students will understand the criteria and procedures for evaluating their transfer readiness. For instance, students will identify their transferable and general education courses, as well as calculate their GPA.

 

5.      Students will gather information and complete (at least one) admission application for a four-year college, preferably online.

 

6.      Students must complete all assignments and submit them to the instructor within the semester.

 

7.      Students must meet with the instructor when assignments are completed.

 

Assignments

 

  1. Identify college(s) that offer the major you are interested in; review the preferred college (s)’ catalog, and conduct an Internet search to learn about the major department’s requirements, admission/transfer requirements, student services, etc.

 

  1. Obtain the required forms/applications for admission (especially as a transfer student), needed student services (for e.g., Financial Aid/scholarship application (s), identify application timelines and begin gathering required information for these forms/applications. For instance, obtain transcripts for all of your college academic work.

 

  1. Review the criteria & procedures for evaluating your transfer readiness. Learn about your preferred major’s general education option(s) and any pre-major requirements, identify any other requirements such as University Requirements at University of California (UC), identify your transferable courses (especially your general education courses) and the number of units you have completed (and still need), and calculate your GPA.

 

  1. Gather required documentation (for e.g., request/submit official final college transcripts be sent to your preferred college), complete the application(s), and submit the admission application (as well as any other requirement such as supplementary documents for certain majors) by the required timeline.

 

  1. Check your application status to ensure your application and all supporting materials have been received.
