Catalog Description: This class provides students with the skills needed to develop a career path throughout their life span. Students develop a Career Portfolio with the aid of career-oriented self-assessments focusing on interests, values, skills and personality type, and with knowledge of labor market information -- increase their career decision-making skills and planning strategies.

What Will We Be Doing?

This course is designed to encourage and assist you in exploring and gathering information about yourself (Self-Assessment) and the world of work (Occupational Exploration). Then learn about synthesizing this "self" and "work" information so you may make relevant career decisions and develop realistic career plan(s) of action throughout your life.

The requirements for this online course will include: writing a (short) autobiography (so we get to know you better), completing several self-assessment activities, reading and completing all the lessons, researching (esp.on the Internet) & recording  occupational information about your career prospects, identifying your career/educational goals, participating in career planning sessions, developing an effective action plan, and creating your Career Portfolio.

What You Will Need

Since this course is conducted through the World Wide Web (WWW)/Internet you need:

Reliable access to a computer that enables you to have access to WWW pages. In other words, a computer and an Internet connection with, for example, a local Internet service provider (ISP) or a commercial service such as (AOL), and a WWW browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer. Also, you will need to make printed copies of your completed assignments. There are "connected to the Internet" computers available in the MPC Library. You need to check user requirements and hours of availability.

An e-mail account (with a corresponding e-mail address) as well as the ability to send and receive e-mail messages. There are many free e-mail services on the Internet. Be sure your e-mail account is working. This is the online way we communicate with each other and an e-mail connection is ESSENTIAL for your participation in this course.

How Do You Participate In This Online Course?

After attending the mandatory orientation meeting, access WebCT’s Internet website and it's Logon Home screen by typing in WebCT’s URL address http://cvc.webct.com

Congratulations! You should be on WebCT’s Logon Home screen. This is one of the most important screens for this online course because this screen enables you to access all or any MPC online courses as well as it provides a lot of assistance to you. While you are at the WebCT Logon Home screen be sure to: 1. Bookmark or put it into your Favorites file, 2. Review WebCT’s Orientations file (esp. the instructions for registering your Username & Password), 3. Become familiar with WebCT’s Online Survival Guide (esp. for students who are new to web-based course activities). Ignore the Access Codes paragraph. If you need help contact me first (via email, phone and/or in person), then MPC’s techie -- Bruce Wilder (via email, especially about technical problems – bwilder@mpc.edu  646-3074).

Now, you are ready to access MPC’s Career Planning Throughout the Life Span (PERS 51) online course. On the WebCT Logon Home screen, scroll down (the left-hand panel) and click on/open the appropriate semester logon link (Fall or Spring). Next, the WebCT ID & Password dialogue screen appears. Please enter your approved WebCT ID & Password.

At this point, you will be on the PERS51 HOME page. This is an equally important screen so become familiar with it’s various links especially it’s Table of Contents (TOC)/LESSONS screen. For example, clicking on this TOC/LESSONS link/icon will display a comprehensive course outline as well as enable you to get to all of this course’s lessons, resources, internal & external links, etc. The TOC/LESSONS screen is the main way you navigate through the course.

For practice, click on/open TOC/LESSONS, then on Lesson 1 – Making Career Decisions -- you will then see Lesson 1. Familiarize yourself with it a bit. Scan titles/sub-titles, get a feel for the topic, be aware of & check a link or two, and check out the assignment(s). Comfort with a new learning environment requires spending some time learning the rhythm/patterns and processes (for e.g., navigating around the website) of online courses. Remember, always save, print & copy the lessons & assignments – for you will need this course info. (hardcopy) to complete this course successfully.

At this point, with Lesson 1. Making Career Decisions -- read the material, complete the assignment(s) as directed, save & print a copy for your Career Portfolio, and submit the assignment to your instructor. I'll read your assignment(s) and send back an email confirmation with comments. Please contact me by email (jdavis@mpc.edu) or by phone (645-1356) if you have any questions, or if you should experience any problems, and/or need an appointment – please feel free to contact me.

Remember, this online course is self-paced and you are in charge. Be sure to complete the Student Questionnaire QUIZ, read the Course Orientation, Calendar/Requirements/Grading, and visit (regularly) the course Calendar to plan your course activities around this schedule.

I look forward to working with you.
