ROV Competition

Team MATE

Winners of the Discovery Channel's first-ever "Depth Charge:  Underwater Robot Challenge"

In April 2002, Team MATE competed in the first-ever "Depth Charge:  Underwater Robot Challenge," an event sponsored by the Discovery Channel and hosted by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) and Texas A&M's Offshore Technology Research Center.  Team MATE was up against the likes of INA, the U.S. Navy Research Submarine NR1 crew and command, the Center for Ocean Technology at the University of South Florida, and the Naval Postgraduate School in events that ranged from an obstacle course to Tug-o-War and one-one Underwater Combats.

Team MATE overcame what seemed like a competition-ending blow - a fried electronic motor controller system - to swim away with the "God of the Sea" victory trophy.  Aside from a few puncture wounds from the "house 'bot" – Oceaneering’s Magnum took several bites out of its buoyancy – Bot MATE Tricks survived with everything intact – including the team’s pride!
