MATERIALS: a three-ring binder to keep work in; a 8.5"x11" notebook for the journal; a thumb drive.  Please have the thumb drive with you Thursday, February 2.

JOURNAL: You will be asked to write in your journal several times a week on topics that I give you in class. The purpose of the journal is to record your opinions of various topics and to develop fluency in your writing. The journals will be collected every few weeks and will be a part of your grade.

PREREQUISITE: ENSL 330/430 or 332/432 or qualifying score on ESL placement test

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to improve your reading and writing. During the semester, you will review the grammatical system of English, read articles and short stories, discuss them, and then summarize what you have read.  You will keep a journal and write occasional compositions.

ESL Center: As part of our class time, we will spend two hours a week in the ESL Center working on vocabulary, reading, listening, grammar, and pronunciation..   

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in a critical part of this course. Your participation is important to the success of this course. If you miss three consecutive classes or more than four during the course, I may drop you from the course. Any tardy of more than 10 minutes will be regarded as an absence.

GRADING:  ENSL 342 has 7.5 units. You must attain at least 70% in the course and 70% in the final exam to pass. You will be graded on homework, tests, summaries, and compositions. There will be a midterm at the 8-week mark; there will be a final exam at the end of the semester. ENSL 442 is a zero-unit course.  You must attain at least 70% in the course and pass a challenge exam at the end of the semester in order to proceed to Level 5. 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:  At the successful completion of this course, you will be able to: recognize main ideas and supporting details in a reading passage; apply reading strategies to understand texts; develop main ideas and supporting details in paragraphs and short essays.
