Reading a Newspaper Article

 

1.    Scan the article, paying particular attention to:

 

a.    the title

b.    any pictures

c.     any charts or other graphics

 

2.    Read the article once quickly in order to understand the main idea.  Think of one sentence that sums up the main idea.

 

3.    Read the story again. This time underline the facts that support the main idea.

 

 

Summarizing a Newspaper Article

 

1.    In the first and second sentences include:

 

    a. the title of the article (in quotes)

b.    the name of the author

c.     the name of the publication (underlined)

d.    the date of the publication

e.    the main idea of the article

 

  1. In the remainder of the summary, include the most important facts that support the main idea of the article.

 

  1. Any verb tense can be used.

 

  1. Limit the summary to no more than 10 sentences.

 

  1. Do NOT plagiarize.

 

  1. Use quotations very sparingly.
