Required Text:

Infants, Children, and Adolescents 6th Edition 2008 or 7th Edition 2011 by Laura E. Berk

Text Loan, Rental, and Purchase options:

1.       There are some 6th edition texts available for semester length loan at the Re-Entry and Multicultural Center located on the 2nd floor of the new student services building. These will be given on a first come/first served basis.

2.       The MPC Bookstore has a “Rent-a-Text” program with 7th editions available.

3.       If you need to purchase a text, there should be plenty of used and less expensive versions out there –

Any 6th or 7th edition is fine.

4.       MPC bookstore also carries the Loose-leaf/3 hole punched text (comes with technology access-not required) ISBN: 9780205011063 (I’m not sure if this is 6th or 7th but either one is fine).

This is the only on campus meeting for this course. An introduction to the course and to the online format will be offered as well as a chance to meet the instructor face to face. Date, time and locations are posted in the class schedule.

Students will be added at the orientation if there is space available in the class
How to Access the iLearn (MOODLE) course site for the first time:

NOTE: You will not have access to the class until the first day of class
Make sure to allow pop ups from this site so that you don't accidentally prevent your own access

Click the "login" link on the top right of the screen

If you have taken a Moodle class before at MPC -it is likely you will use your same username and password. If this is your first time -follow the directions below:
  • Username: First letter of first name and whole last name followed by the last 4 digits of your student ID. This is not case sensitive
  • Example (I'll use my name):  jmillovich2345
  • Password is changeme (lower case)
  • Once you log in you will be prompted to change your password
  • Write your password down and save it somewhere safe since no one else will have it if you forget or loose it. I recommend emailing it to yourself so that you always have access to it.
  • When your “Edit Profile” comes up, make sure you have a valid email address entered in the space called for. This can be any email you check regularly.  You CANNOT go further unless you supply an email address. Make sure it is a working email account to avoid missing important class information.

Online Course Format

Online courses are designed to allow students to make the most of their time without sacrificing quality education. Applying what is learned to real life settings is an integral part of the study of child development. In this class, students are required to visit children's settings to observe and reflect on what they see, applying course concepts in several analysis papers.

How Online Classes Work

Instead of attending lectures on campus, online students attend "virtual" classrooms via the Internet. All course content and student participation is conducted online.

At MPC we use the MOODLE course delivery system that allows the the posting of assignments, syllabi, and course outlines. In addition, there are communication tools such as discussion forums, email, and online grade response areas.

Learning materials vary from class to class, but may include textbooks, video demonstrations, Power Point presentations, interactive lessons, and Web resources.

Learning activities may include writing papers, posting comments or essays to online discussion forums, completing individual or group projects, visiting children's settings for observations or participation and taking quizzes.

While students can choose when and where they work, there are weekly deadlines for homework and exams
