Project Invest  

 

Objective:  

This project will provide students with the opportunity to participate in an Internet-based stock market simulation.  In addition, students will conduct stock research.  By completing these activities, students will increase their knowledge of stocks, stock markets, and stock evaluation.  Furthermore, students will enhance problem solving and critical thinking skills.

PointsThis project is worth 200 points.  Students with the top 10 portfolios in the competition will earn an additional 10 points.

Assignment:                                              

You have been given a gift of $100,000 to invest in the stock market. Choose three to five stocks in which to invest. 

Part 1:   Create a virtual portfolio of your stocks at www.yahoo.com

Part 2Complete the attached stock research report for one stock.

Part 3:   Create a chart showing your total investment value for each of the four weeks of the project. Use the last trading price on Friday as the value of your stock each week (found online any time after close of trading 4 p.m. EST Friday until the markets open again on Monday morning or in Saturday's Monterey Herald Business Section.)

Initial purchase and research report due:

  • Monday, October 12 (include your stock research report for one of your stocks and a listing showing your initial purchase of three to five stocks plus any cash left in your account)

Progress reports due:

    In your final report include a listing of which stocks you chose and why, a discussion of how your stocks performed, and a summary of your experience with online portfolio tracking.  Include a printout of your Yahoo! portfolio.
  • Each student will present a short oral presentation in class on August 4 telling which stocks were chosen and how they performed.  The top ten performing portfolios as of Friday, July 30 will earn a bonus of 10 points.
