Sample Study Sheet: Making Solutions From a Solid and Water

Tip-off  You are asked to describe how you would make an aqueous solution from a pure solid, and you are given the volume and the molarity of solution desired.

General Steps  Follow these steps.

Calculate the mass in grams of solid to be weighed. (See general dimensional analysis setup below.)

The first conversion factor is only necessary if you are not given the amount of solution in liters or milliliters.

Answer the question with a sentence like the following.

Dissolve (calculated) grams of (solute) in a minimum amount of water, and dilute with water to the desired total volume.
