Essay 6, due May 18
(20 points)
The Blue Highways of Central California
For this paper you will visit a
small town in California, give an oral report and write a paper of 2-4 pages on
the experience. The readings we have done in class from Steinbeck and
Least Heat Moon are examples of the kind of thing you should try to do. The
student essays at the bottom of this page are also good examples. There
is a link to possible destinations at the bottom of this page.
Try to find a place, or a person,
or an experience that is not a typical one for tourists. What did you
learn from the person, place or experience? Did you learn something about
California, or about yourself, that you did not know?
When you write you can use
description to suggest the meaning of the place. If possible, try to have
a conversation with someone and include it in your paper.
On this paper you can relax a little bit: You don't have to use the
college essay style of thesis statement, topic sentences, support, etc.
Use your imagination, have fun, open your eyes and ears, explore....
It might be more fun to work in
pairs or small groups on this assignment-- though each of you has to turn in
your own paper.
