Prepositions

Prepositions are notoriously difficult in English.  There are a few rules, but there seem to be many more exceptions.  Why do we say "a reason for" rather than "a reason of"?  Why do we "talk about" something but never "discuss about" the same thing?  Why does "pick on" mean to bother someone and "pick out" mean to choose?
