Monterey Bay Aquarium

MATE Center

Want to excite your students about the world of the Deep Sea?  The Monterey Bay Aquarium, in conjunction with the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE), have developed several programs appropriate for students in upper elementary to high school grades.

Each spring, the Monterey Bay area fills with students coming to compete against their peers in the Underwater Robotics Contest held at Monterey Peninsula College.  Students design and build their vehicles from PVC pipe and small DC motors. This year's contest will take place April 16, 2005.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium supports a classroom outreach program which provides students the opportunity to build their own ROV's at their school.  Grades 4-12 in schools within 60 minutes from Monterey, California are eligible.  The program is free of charge.

Several teacher workshops are presented throughout the school year to train teachers how to build and use the underwater vehicles in the classroom.  During the summer, the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) hosts a one week institute which highlights curriculum developed by educators for use in high school and college level courses.
