Competition events included: Pollution Solution. Teams piloted their ROVs to the bottom of the swimming pool (maximum depth 5 feet). They had 10 minutes to locate and retrieve crushed aluminum cans, some of which were redeemable for prizes. Leaky Luckenbach. Teams piloted their ROVs to the bottom of the deep end (maximum depth 12 feet) to reach a “leaking” barrel and patch as many “holes” in the barrel as possible, using 2-inch square white Velcro “loops.” 10 minutes was allowed. Ranger Event. Each team had 5 minutes to set up and deploy their ROV. The operators were located in a tent which did not allow viewing of the pool. The team had to use the ROV’s camera to complete three Mission Tasks: 1. Find and recover the lost towfish (approximately 2” diameter black plastic pipe about 1 meter long, with a ring for attaching a line). 2. Find and identify the Luckenbach’s brass bell. The teams had to use the video camera to read the captain’s name, and show the image to the judges. 3. Patch the hole in the leaking oil barrel. Each team’s ROV had to grip a patch, carry it to the barrel, and place it over the hole. |
