MATERIALS: a three-ring binder to keep work in; a 8.5"x11" notebook for the journal; an English/English dictionary, one computer diskette.  Please have the diskette with you tomorrow, Tuesday, January 30.

JOURNAL: You will be asked to write in your journal several times a week on topics that I give you in class. The purpose of the journal is to record your opinions of various topics and to develop fluency in your writing. The journals will be collected every few weeks and will be a part of your grade.

PREREQUISITE: ENSL 370/470 or 372/472 or qualifying score on ESL placement test

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to improve your reading, writing, and grammar skills. We will work on summary, vocabulary development, and reading strategies. You will have opportunities to read good writing, to discuss it, and then write about a similar topic.

COMPUTER LAB: As part of our class time, we will spend two hours a week in the computer lab working on typing skills, the internet , and an array of educational software.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in a critical part of this course. Your participation is important to the success of this course. If you miss three consecutive classes or more than four during the course, I may drop you from the course. Any tardy of more than 10 minutes will be regarded as an absence.

GRADING: This course is a credit/no credit course. You must attain at least a "C" in the course to pass. You will be graded on in-class work, participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and compositions. There will be a midterm at the 8-week mark and a final exam. You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course.
