Objectives include:  reducing anxiety about public speaking, developing poise, creating formal, well-organized outlines, demonstrating logical reasoning and documentation of sources, recognizing the audience and speaking occasion, and designing and delivering engaging speeches.

Attendance: For obvious reasons, attendance and punctuality in this course are very important. Grades will be negatively affected by more than 3 absences in a semester. Students will be dropped for 3 consecutive absences unless I am notified of an extreme circumstance. Even when you are absent, you are responsible for any missed work. If you plan to miss class:

  • Attempt to notify me before class begins (646-3008 or 646-4100).
  • Request another day and time to make up the assignment missed. If not, a zero will be recorded.
  • You may make up only 1 speech. (It will still receive late penalty)
  • Any late speech/assignment will receive minimum one-grade deduction penalty.
  • Missing DVD's on days of speeches will receive penalty reduction points.
  • Plagiarism: Presenting the words or ideas of others as your own without acknowledging their origins is a serious crime. Depending on the seriousness, the penalty can range anywhere from expulsion to imprisonment. At MPC, if I discover you have plagiarized, you will receive 0 points for the assignment.
