Course Description:
The general chemistry sequence is designed for students planning to enter science, medicine, and related professions.  This course focuses on the following topics: chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solution chemistry, acid and base chemistry, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, and gases.

READING ASSIGNMENTS:
This course will cover chapters 11 and 13-19 in Chemistry: The Molecular Science by Moore, Stanitski, Jurs, 3rd edition.  I strongly encourage you to read the relevant chapter before I discuss it in lecture because the lecture progresses at a pace appropriate for those people already familiar with the material.
Since mastery of each topic area is a necessary prerequisite for understanding subsequent topics, the importance of  regular attendance and maintaining a current reading schedule can not be overemphasized.

EXAMS:        Four  one-hour  exams
QUIZZES:     A minimum of three will be given.
LABS:            Reports due by the following lab session; graded on a 12-point scale
ATTENDANCE:   mandatory at both lecture and lab.
Call and leave a message at 646-4152 (or email me at rrinehart@mpc.edu)

BEFORE missing any session.
Missed quizzes and exams will be made up at my discretion by  prearranged appointment.
I guarantee that you will NOT improve your grade by calling in sick and asking for a makeup!
It will NOT be possible to make up missed labs.
Quizzes and exams not promptly made up will count as F and included in the overall average.

Grading:
Grades are assigned and recorded on the basis of a 12-point scale as indicated below:
( A+ = 12, A = 11, A- = 10, B+ = 9, B = 8, B- = 7, C+ = 6, C = 5, C- = 4, D+ = 3, D = 2, D- = 1, F = 0 )
Since MPC does not use plus and minus grades, your final course grade will be reported as a straight letter.
Exams:  4 @ 12.5% each:  50%
QUIZZES:   15%
LAB REPORTS:   25%
LAB TECHNIQUE:   5%
Attendance & Deportment:   5%
HOMEWORK:      Chapter problem assignments will be given, but will generally  not be graded. Nonetheless, it is highly recommended that they be done as scheduled. Special assignments may be given.
TUTORING:    MPC provides "Supplemental Instruction" funded by the ACCESS program at UC Santa Cruz. An experienced MPC student has been specially selected for this course. He or she will attend the lectures, may be present during labs as well, and will have additional hours as she or he schedules. If you should need additional tutoring, you will have to arrange that yourself
