DOWNLOAD
ACD Labs ChemSketch™
http://www.acdlabs.com/download/ a really convenient structure-drawing program, especially when you're composing a quiz at the last minute! |
|
DOWNLOAD Adobe Acrobat™
Reader 4.0
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html if you don't have it already, you need this to read .pdf documents, which are very common at many government and university sites. |
|
DOWNLOAD Macromedia Shockwave™®
http://sdc.shockwave.com/downloads/ or http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/frameset.fhtml?P1_Prod_Version=aShockwave you'll need this to play the animations at Mark Bishop's site and others like the Periodic Spiral as well. |

CHIME™
by MDL
www.mdli.com/download/ follow links If you can see the structure at the left, you've got it already. If not, you're missing out on the most popular way to view and manipulate 3D pictures of molecules! Head on up to the site and download it now!
Chime is available in both Netscape and MS IE
versions, but the Netscape version is the only one that will work reliably
for all Chime sites. |
|
DOWNLOAD MDL CHIME™
2.x
www.mdli.com/download/ follow their links A really useful
tool for viewing .PDB
files as manipulable 3D images. Available for both MS Internet
Explorer and Netscape -- why not get both versions at the same time
and make life simpler no matter which browser you prefer? [You'll see
my feelings on browsers just a few entries down!!] |
|
DOWNLOAD MDL IsisDraw™ 2.4
Freeware that's really convenient to use. Draw a structure, select it and copy directly to MS Word™ with no hassles. Different look than with CS ChemDraw™ . I used ISIS to do the benzene icon for the organic sites. |
| DOWNLOAD KnowItAll® Academic
Edition from Bio-Rad http://www.knowitall.com/academic/welcome.html "In a continued commitment to academia, Bio-Rad is offering this completely FREE and fully functional software package to promote learning and research in the academic community... draw structures, perform IR and Raman functional group analysis, access a multi-technique spectral database with cross-references, and generate high-quality reports..." I'll let you know how I like it after I've had a chance to use it.... |
|
DOWNLOAD MS Internet Explorer™ 5.5 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/ie55sp1.htm A survey by one British chemsite had MS IE™ a 3:1 favorite over Netscape™ but you need both, for reasons you'll soon see. Please, Mr. Gates, let's make IE a bit more plugin-friendly -- I'm tired of having to use Netscape to access a handful of really good Chime sites. NOTE: on 8/3/01, MDL issued a notice that the new MS IE service pack [MS IE 5.5 SP2] would NOT support MDL's Chime and Chime Pro. Make sure you use 5.5 SP1 or lower until further notice!!! |
|
DOWNLOAD Netscape Communicator™
4.75 or 4.76
http://home.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive47x.html 4.75 or 4.76 works fine with CHIME -- in fact, for some perverse reason, as explained by Eric Mertz at his World Molecular Visualization site, many CHIME sites don't work well with MS IE; nonetheless, beware newer Netscape versions, especially the dreaded Netscape 6 !!!! See further comments under WebCT below. |

Orbitals by
David Manthey at SUNY Albany
http://www.albany.net/~cprimus/orb/index.html Neat pictures of orbitals -- and orbital-drawing software you can download from "Orbital Central" It is strongly recommended that Orbital Viewer be run on a Pentium computer or better. |

Cabrillo

a really excellent CHIME site, with tools and tutorials. Unfortunately, you can't get the site to work right with MS Internet Explorer™ even with the IE version of CHIME installed, so access it with Netscape Communicator™ 4.75 or 4.76. |

| eChem Molecular Modeling
Program from hi-ce*
*Center for Highly Interactive Computing in Education at the University of Michigan http://hi-ce.org/sciencelaboratory/eChem/ "eChem is a simplified and learner-centered design version of professional visualizing tools. It allows students to build and manipulate three-dimensional models of molecules with a visualizer module. It also allows students to compare computationally predicted properties of the molecule with properties they observe in the laboratory. All views and modules are linked together, allowing the student to easily switch between various representations of the molecule." I've tried it and it really is easy to use. Aimed at a high school audience, it has potential uses in higher ed as well. |
| MakeAShorterLink
http://www.makeashorterlink.com/about.php This web site provides a simple service - when you find a page on the web whose address is too long to paste into an email or other document, you can use their free service to generate a shorter, simpler address. You can pass that shorter URL on to others by email, confident that most email clients will recognise it as a URL and turn it into something clickable. |
| Parallel Graphics: download
Cortona VRML Viewer http://www.parallelgraphics.com/products/cortona/download/iexplore/ even though it seems that VRML may have passed its peak, there are still scores of great sites out there where you will need a viewer plugin to see the goodies. This one works very well with IE and Netscape 4.7x. |

| ACDLabs
Advanced Chemistry Development
Makers of really useful software -- some of it available free! ACD ChemSketch, HNMR, CNMR, .... some of it is compatible with CS ChemOffice as well. |
| ArgusLab v. 3.0 3D Molecule
Builder from Planaria Software
You can download a free trial version. I haven't tried it yet, but plan to after I've asked them a few questions. The licensed version is currently $79.95 for academic users and has a long list of features. I appreciated that they have a "known issues and bugs" page [it's quite short]. |
| Cambridge Software
the makers of CS ChemOffice™ [no chemist should be without it!!], CS ChemDraw™, CS Chem3D™, CS ChemFinder™, CS ChemInfo™, CS ClipArt™, CS MOPAC™....... BUT watch out for that free Chem 3D viewing plugin -- it may change the way your Chime structures look on MS IE and Netscape unless you load Chime afterward [it's a MIME thing]! |

Chemistry
http://www.webct.com/chemistry/ considered by many to be the premier online course management system; you can get a free tryout, but it's much better if your school signs on and arranges for one of their people to present a training session. In any case, they have lots of resources that are available free. Check it out... FLASH! on 5/18/01 WebCT issued the following announcement: "After extensive testing, the WebCT Development Team has determined that the Netscape 6 and 6.01 browsers will not be supported in WebCT 3.6 Standard or Campus Editions. Our testing has revealed that several significant issues in these latest versions of the Netscape browser seriously affect how WebCT content is displayed, and impair the designed functions of some WebCT tools." we're all on the same page where 6.x is concerned! |
