The Center for Environmental Research and Conservation Workshop
Where:
The Institute takes place at a field site in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic where we are supported by the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation http://www.puntacana.org/
Who:
Public and private school educators teaching all content areas may attend as well as those from graduate schools of education.

The Center for Environmental Research and Conservation (CERC) at Columbia University offers a Teacher Training Institute each summer. Now in its 4th year, the Institute is designed so that educators and CERC faculty work together on inquiry based education and experiential learning at field sites while earning credits in conservation biology in human ecology. CERC is a consortium of Columbia University, American Museum of Natural History, The New York Botanical Garden, The Wildlife Conservation Society, and Wildlife Trust. CERC's two-part mission is to build environmental leadership and to solve complex problems, in order to stem the loss of biological diversity and achieve environmental sustainability. http://www.cerc.columbia.edu

Participants are eligible to receive six graduate credits from Columbia that meet New York State Certification requirements. For teachers from the New York City public education system, these credits can be applied to a master's degree or to the "30 points above" for position and salary increase.

Costs: Columbia University has a set rate for credits, setting the Institute costs at $6,250 plus airfare if you decide to go the Dominican Republic. Fellowships in amounts up to $3,000 are available - just fill out the fellowship section of the application and submit to us. Additionally, CERC covers all your room and board, on-site transportation, and equipment at the field sites.

If you wish to participate in the Institute on a non-credit basis, you may do so at a rate of $3,125.  CERC can not offer fellowship to those participating on a non-credit basis, but will still cover room and board, on-site transportation and equipment costs at the field site. You will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the Institute.

To Apply: You may apply online https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=col-cerc or download an application from our website. Applications are due April 21st

International Coastal Cleanup Day Workshop:
When: September 20 though October 11, 2008
Who:
Anyone.
Cost: FREE!

Each fall, people all over the country participate in COASTWEEKS, a celebration of our coastal and water resources. This year the event takes place from September 20 to October 11, kicked off by International Coastal Cleanup Day. In California, COASTWEEKS is coordinated by the California Coastal Commission. The Commission will feature a calendar of events in a special section of our website, and we’ll be conducting outreach to publicize it. Special events created for COASTWEEKS and prescheduled coast- and water-related events are eligible. This celebration is a great way to expand your outreach and to participate in a nation-wide effort to encourage appreciation and preservation of our coast and our inland waterways. And it’s free!

If you'd like to publicize your coast- or water-related event(s) on our website during COASTWEEKS, please visit www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/coastweeks/coastweeks.html to download an event form, or refer me to event information on your website. Please feel free to forward this email to other organizations in California working for our coast and water resources. If you have any questions or would like the form emailed, mailed or faxed to you, please contact Annie Kohut Frankel afrankel@coastal.ca.gov
