Fish Gotta Swim: Marine GIS and Geography Instruction
GIS is becoming an increasingly important tool for studying, analyzing, and managing marine environments. Through intensive summer workshops, the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center in Monterey, CA, offers opportunities for educators to combine GIS technology with marine science applications, and encourages the transfer of these ideas and strategies to a classroom setting. Using sample lessons and examples of student work, this session will illustrate how the MATE program can be adapted to address geography standards and objectives while introducing learners to sophisticated concepts of oceanography and marine science. Participants will receive a CD with lesson plans, assessment rubrics, PowerPoint presentations and ArcReader documents.
