EAST Initiative Projects 2003-2004

Where is the Fire? Last year the Dumas High School EAST lab plotted all the fire hydrants within the city limits. After working on this project, a group of students decided to investigate whether there was a correlation between the locations of fires and the availability of hydrants in that area. This project was highlighted at the EAST Conference in Little Rock Arkansas. Click here to see the page on the EAST website

MainStreet Project: done in conjunction with the MainStreet USA director in Dumas, Arkansas.  Students are helping design a walking track and educational garden around an old cotton gin site at the end of Main Street.  The students used GPS units and have begun to develop a plan.

Crystal Meth Project: done in collaboration with five other EAST labs. Students are doing a lot of research for an educational web site and lesson plans for teachers. The students have used GPS units to get coordinates for three sites which were reported as having been "busted" for crystal meth in the fall of 2003 and in 2004. The students are trying to get more information from the Sheriff's office for other sites.
