Built an ROV for children to pilot at a program at a local nature center event, “Science in Nature”. The ROV was piloted by elementary children in a creek at the nature center.  The children were able to observe the underwater environment via the on-board camera.

Awarded a $2500 grant from her local education foundation.  This grant will fund the implementation of an ROV curriculum as part of Julie's physics and aquatic science classes, which will begin in January, 2006 with 150 students. If funding is available, she will take her top 2 teams to the 2006 Houston ROV Regional competition.

ROV technology was incorporated his robotics class this past fall. Students designed and built ROVs and they had a mini-competition at a local swimming pool. To see photos of the event, click here!

They also sponsored a FIRST LegoLeague Tournament held at Monarch in November, 2005. The theme was Ocean Odyssey. His high school class mentored a middle school robotics team. That team built a model ROV out of Legos and presented it at the competition for their research project.

Dennis Degner Clatsop Community College Established an ROV club at Clatsop Community College (CCC) open to both high school and college students.

Forwarded an outline for the first marine tech class to be offered at CCC to the VP of instructional services. It is a one-credit class titled "Exploring Marine Technology" and, if approved, will be offered to an alternative education at a local high school. In addition to earning a college credit the high school will award a science credit for the class.

Connie Gonzalez Bakersfield College, MESA Program

Is incorporating ROVs into an independent studies robotics course.  Supports the MESA Santa Cruz leadership retreat where an ROV workshop is held.

Seth Goodman Phoenix College Has been supporting Phoenix College with developing their GIS program.
J.B. Groves Wharton County Junior College

Currently mentoring an Automation and Control Team at Lamar High School in Rosenberg, Texas. They are involved at present of building robots and programming their behavior. The group is a Technology Student Association group.

Laurie Guest-Mackay (note that Laurie also attended the GIS Institute)

Mare Island Technology Teaching the physics of flight with kites. Also teaches a class of 144 8th graders. Harbour Freight Tools of Vallejo donated 75 kites. Starting another project where old ROV skills will come in handy. Her and some old students in high school are going to make a float-able. It will attach to one of the Bird Rescue Wildlife Rehab Pools, with the underwater camera on it, to capture loons and other divers.

Was awarded Teacher of the Year for Solano County in 2006!

Laurie spearheaded a school-wide project to investigate the fake murder of the school's principal to teach students STEM skills.  Visit:

The Mate summer institute has been an important part of his curriculum in two of his courses, Robotics Engineering and Principles of Engineering.  They have brought in speakers from the industry and use the ROV in a bag project with an in house competition.  This will also be the third year they will have a entry in the Ranger class of the Monterey regional.  Look forward to seeing you this spring.

Is entering the 2006 Monterey Regional ROV competition and will be mentoring his robotics students in the creation of their ROV.
