Thomas Jett California Academy of Math & Science Developing a team for Southern California Regional (Ranger class). The regional assembled 2 complete power modules out of the eight we will need for the entire freshman class of 163 students. The freshman class will be designing tools for task completion in the school pool after regionals this school year. They will be working in teams of 4 using the 8 power modules in 5 classes. Their tools must be able to add onto the power modules and be independently ballasted. The regional team had the two complete power modules running for the school Open House in 2007 and using 10 foot diameter pools. In 2008, a class of 24 students rebuilt all 8 of the classroom ROVs for Open House and use again with the entire freshman class. CAMS has entered both Ranger and Explorer competitions.

Rick Pinkava Cuyahoga Valley Career Center After purchasing a pool similar to yours, we used the ROV building project to showcase our programs at the 35th anniversary of the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in Sept. 2006. It was a real hit with the visitors and was a good stepping stone for introducing ROV construction into our classes. We taught a unit in the spring of 2007 to our classes and it went over real big, especially actually running them in the pool. Rick taught a summer camp here at CVCC in June 2007 for middle school students (while I did CO2 cars) and was able to get a local high school to let us use their pool. The camp was very successful. Jeff Rhodes (a 2007 ROV institute alumnus) will be running the same camp here at our school this June.

Since the summer '06, have had 156 students in grades 6-12 go through our introductory ROV program. The introductory program does a number of exercises in buoyancy and electricity, then turns the kids loose with an ROV-in-a-bag to meet a challenge in our above-ground pools. 14 of these students have also gone through a more advanced program where they design and build their own control boxes and pot their video cameras. We mentored 3 Scout Division teams last year and are presently working on the current competition with a total of 44 students and 7 teachers from 4 schools. We're expecting at least 6 teams to register, including 4 Ranger teams.

Held six ROV workshops with the support of Conni Bock for students and community members.  Click here to see the flyer.

Janet Vail Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resources Institute

The Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resources Institute has begun to integrate ROVs into our vessel-based and classroom outreach programs.  The vessel program takes thousands of students in grades 4 and up on our research and education vessels for hands-on water quality sampling. Many of the participants in our programs are from inner city schools.

K-12 students sample Lake Michigan and a drowned river mouth (Muskegon Lake) by use of a Ponar dredge.  This is followed up by underwater video taken using a home-made ROV.

We participate in a number of career fairs for 8th-12th grade students.  Marine technology has been highlighted as a career pathway.  We demonstrate our home-made ROV and share the video that was made using the ROV.  When we have visitors to our Lake Michigan Center for tours and classroom activities, the ROV is on display along with the video.

This low-tech approach to ROVs is supplemented by Dr. Bopi Biddanda’s ROV research in Lake Huron.  Drs. Bopi Biddanda of GVSU-AWRI and Stephen Nold of University of Wisconsin – Stout are working on a project to describe the abundance, diversity, and activities of the microbial communities inhabiting submerged sinkhole ecosystems.

Received a small grant from the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly to work with a local middle school to construct a ROV.

In Fall, the school will continue with their ROV work and perhaps participate in the MATE competitions.

GVSU has a summer program called STEPS, a tuition-free summer camp that introduces young women to the exciting possibilities of careers in engineering, science and technology.  We made a “ROV-in-a-bag” available to that program and for a summer camp in oceanography.

GVSU-AWRI was a part of the events surrounding the Great Lakes Regional ROV competition on April 28, 2007.   Dr. Biddanda gave a presentation on his research and Dr. Janet Vail served as a judge at the competition.  With our experience at the MATE Workshop, we were able to make a positive contribution to this competition.

Stewart Burley Waimea High School

Built an ROV to showcase at a science show for 4, 6, and 8 grade students (approximately 3,500 students attended the science show) and allowed the students to drive the ROV.

Created an after school ROV club that plans to compete in the Big Island Regional ROV competition.  They have won 40,000 in scholarships for the students and 5,000 for building materials from Computer Science Corporation.

The ROV Club from Waimea High School participated in the BIRR in Hilo. Airline and hotel picked up by Computer Sciences Corp (CSC). They placed 3rd in the competition!

The entire school had an special assembly to honor the CSC/ROV Club. They were recognized again on 21 May when all the schools on Kauai get together to learn what company will adopt them. CSC and STU will again adopt Waimea High School and start a new ROV Club. The team will also be honored at a Senator Inouye fundraiser on Kauai 5 July.

The entire class of 12 will be going to college this fall. A couple have changed their major to ocean science.
