Math 261 - Beginning Algebra

Information for Prospective SPRING 2012 Online Algebra students

Please be certain to read all of the information posted below before deciding to take this course online!  You are required to come to campus for orientation and scheduled exams.

Being successful in an online math class requires motivation, organization, strong prerequisite skills, resourcefulness, patience, and determination.

Please carefully consider what you're getting into before you sign up for this class!  Many students think that online math will be easier than on-campus math.  For most students, the opposite is true.  In my experience, fewer than half of the students who start the class actually complete it.  This is NOT a self-paced course.  For fall session, you should plan to spend at least 12 hours per week learning the course material, completing online homework assignments, and studying for on-campus exams.

The  mandatory on-campus orientation is Saturday, January 28 from 2:00 to4:00 in the Sam Karas Room (near the main entrance to the library).  If you cannot attend orientation, you must e-mail me to make alternate arrangements or you will be dropped from the course.

You will be required to complete ON-CAMPUS exams for this course.  The scheduled exam dates and times for SPRING 2012 are:

  • Wednesday, February 22 at 6:00 pm:    Chapters 1 – 3
  • Wednesday, March 14 at 6:00 pm:          Chapters 4 - 5
  • Wednesday, April 18 at 6:00 pm:             Chapters 4 - 5
  • Wednesday, May 16 at 6:00 pm:              Chapters 8 - 9
  • Wednesday, May 30 at 6:00 pm:              Chapter 10 and cumulative Final

If you are unable to take your on-campus exams at these times, you may request to take your exam the following evening at 6:00 pm with Elizabeth Bishop's intermediate algebra class.  If NEITHER of these times works for your schedule, please do not sign up for this class!

No late make-up tests will be given.

Fall information is posted below.  Spring info is coming soon!

If you have decided to take this course, please carefully consider your options for obtaining the course materials.  You can:

  • Buy a new textbook bundled with "MyMathLab" (about $120 be sure you get the NEW edition with the yellow cover - it's spiral bound)

  • Buy the standalone version of "MyMathLab"  (it's about $85 this year at the bookstore)

  • Buy an access code online at the coursecompass website using a credit card (about $80 - cheapest option)

Only the FIRST option includes a printed textbook.  The other two choices give you access to the entire textbook online, but no printed materials.  You may be able to find a cheap used copy of the book on EBay or Amazon, but please remember that you MUST have a MyMathLab access code to take this course.  NOTE:  The SPRING 2011 Course ID will NOT work for Fall 2011 - be sure to look at the FALL syllabus!

If you are already registered for the course at MPC and you want to purchase your materials early and get started learning the system before orientation, read the welcome letter and/or syllabus for information on accessing the course website. Course materials that have been opened or that are purchased online cannot be returned for a refund, so be VERY sure that you want to take the course before you proceed.
